WHAT Comprising work of a variety of media, from video installation to sculpture, Kapwani Kiwanga’s first solo exhibition in Africa investigates the intersection of history, politics and the organic. Titled The Sun Never Sets, the exhibition is a subtle critique on the 20th century expression ‘the sun never sets on the British Empire’, in which the Parisian-based artist unpacks the ‘collective memory’ of colonialism in Africa and positions the natural world as a ‘witness’ to colonial rule.

WHAT If you haven't been to one of HQ’s Fine Wining events before, now is your chance. This month the restaurant pairs with the highly-acclaimed Cederberg Private Cellar for a decadent night of wining and dining. The three-course meal consists of a crisp salad of cos and iceberg leaves, toasted pine nuts and Parmesan shavings, followed by stuffed portobello mushrooms or sirloin for mains and a refreshing spring fruit bowl for dessert. Each dish gets a special Cederberg wine pairing for an all-encompassing culinary experience.

Go on a guided walk through the gardens during which an experienced guide will introduce one of the oldest and largest collections of exotic trees in South Africa. A minimum donation of R40 is required, which will go to the Friends of the Arderne Gardens to help support one of the city’s oldest botanical gardens.

WHAT In its second annual exhibit and auction, BRAVE raises scholarships for the next generation of female leaders around Africa. With live music, canapés by The Yard and stories from extraordinary explorers and leaders, including two of the all-female Black Mamba anti-poaching team, acclaimed artist Justine Mahoney and GUILD director Trevyn McGowan. The auction will feature one-of-a-kind pieces created by well-known artists and designers, including a BRAVE cuff by Kirsten Goss, a BRAVE limited-edition furniture piece by Laurie Wiid van Heerden, an exclusive BRAVE ceramic piece by Ceramic Matters, bespoke safaris from Wilderness Safaris and Singita and a weekend at a Perfect Hideaways retreat. It will be an evening of fun in support of an excellent cause.
