After launching in 2014, 100% Design South Africa is now one of Africa’s premier platforms for high-end contemporary design, and this year’s event is set to impress. The exhibition, which is happening alongside Decorex Joburg on 9-13 August 2017, will feature big hitters such as Dokter and Misses, Gregor Jenkin, David Krynauw and James Mudge, with major brands such as Créma Design and Herman Miller also making an appearance.
‘This will be so much more than just another interior design show,’ says programme director Cathy O’Clery. ‘Visitors to this year’s 100% Design South Africa can expect no less than wall-to-wall proof of the artistic and aesthetic genius of their fellow South Africans – the sort of genius that’s helped make our country as gorgeous as it is.’
To help guide you on your 100% Design experience, we’ve put together our top exhibitions to look out for this year.
1. we are joburg
If you remember We Are Cape Town in April, then you’ll know what the We Are Joburg exhibition is all about. For the Gauteng version, works from creative minds across Jozi will reveal just how its singular Afro-urban aesthetic has been conceived – it’s striking, contemporary and unashamedly bold.
2. gregor jenkin’s new works
Gregor Jenkin has been named as the Feature Designer for 2017, and will present new pieces at 100% Design South Africa this year. We can’t wait to see what this top local designer, who’s always consistent both in terms of quality and creativity, has in store.
3. the light tank
This multisensory experience dubbed The Light Tank is completely new to 100% Design South Africa and will combine lighting, sound and animation in a completely immersive and experiential display – we’re eager to see how it will play out.
4. design in the service industry
As the driving force behind the 100% Design Café this year, David Krynauw will reveal his talents as a restaurant interior designer. Meanwhile, at 100% Hotel, Source Interior Brand Architects will highlight its vision of a contemporary African hotel, distilling a unique concept called ‘Afrotel’.
5. fabric and wallpaper gallery
We always go mad for textiles, so the new Fabric and Wallpaper Gallery has us very excited. Here, a top selection of international and local fabrics and wallpaper from 16 leading fabric houses and producers will be on display.
6. seed to seat
Another fresh addition to the show, Seed to Seat is a sustainable initiative in partnership with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC). This year, seven local furniture designers were commissioned to come up with unique seating using various types of hardwood, and they’ll all be unveiled for the first time at 100% Design South Africa.
7. 100% office
One of the key events at the show, 100% Office will be curated in collaboration with Raw Studios to present inspiring modular office furniture systems. The display will be surrounded by the Inspired Workspace sector comprising other leading office exhibitors, all showcasing the latest office trends and designs.
