Intsikizi Tapestries Exhibition

WHERE Ilse Schermers Art Gallery, Franschhoek
WHAT Following on from the Keiskamma Art Project, IS Art Gallery will be hosting an exhibition of the Intsikizi Tapestries. The six-piece set of the exhibition focuses on the hunt for the endangered Southern Ground Hornbill (Intsikizi). Using the style, composition and content of the famous European artwork ‘The Hunt for the Unicorn’ as a starting point, the theme flows in a Xhosa context.

WHAT The exhibition showcases two of Roger Ballen’s collections: Asylum of the Birds (a selection of black-and-white images photographed in a house on the outskirts of Joburg that mingles truth and fiction and feature a number of birds) and Theatre of the Apparitions (a narrative of Ballenesque images that are inspired by hand-drawn carvings on blacked-out windows in an abandoned women’s prison).
