Introduced in February 2018, The Trenery Guild is a collaborative project that partners Trenery with some of SA’s leading artists and artisans. Each creative has been asked to interpret and celebrate the lifestyle brand’s anchors of premium fabrication, unique prints, excellent craftsmanship and considered quality through a commissioned artwork and unique in-store activation. The fifth collaborator in a series of eight Trenery Guild collaborations, award-winning textile designer and founder of The Ninevites Nkuli Mlangeni has created a bespoke, handwoven rug. The piece, inspired by the Trenery September collection, is a geometric interplay of salmon, sage and slate, colours that are referenced in the new season’s range.
Mlangeni’s project The Ninevites is all about creating a platform for collaborations, which make beautiful things through innovative designs that tell stories of black culture and unheard voices. Staying true to this principle, The Trenery Guild x The Ninevites rug was created in collaboration with a women’s cooperative in Prince Albert.
Trenery head of design Jane Grimme is excited by the collaboration, saying: ‘We are overjoyed to be partnering with Nkuli Mlangeni of The Ninevites for this project. Nkuli has an infectious passion for quality craftsmanship and premium natural processes that is evident throughout her creative processes.’
Made from hand-dyed, pure woollen yarn that was spun specifically for this project, Mlangeni’s beautiful rug was unveiled at a special event at the Trenery Sandton City standalone store on 25 August 2018.
To complement the collaboration, a set of naturally dyed napkins have been developed as a limited-edition gift with each purchase – to be awarded to qualifying customers at standalone stores around the country.
