Even the most sleek and contemporary of kitchens can do with a touch of colour and a hint of playfulness, and Durban-based company UCAN’s limited edition beaded handles are a subtle but beautiful way to achieve such accents.
The vibrant doorknobs are hand-beaded by KwaZulu-Natal-based craftsman Sandile Sithole, who was discovered by UCAN’s marketing folk when he was selling his work at a market in Kloof. The two parties joined forces, and with the help of his sister and other local community members, Sandile got to work on carefully crafting a limited edition range of 1000 of these intricate accessories.

The project has enabled this gifted self-taught artist to showcase his skills on a broad scale, and it’s also given UCAN covetable new products that are unique and distinctly African for its range.
While Sandile has a great eye for colour, he also receives guidance from UCAN’s creative head, Justin Thomson, to make sure that the handles’ hues reflect international trends. The result is an accessory that’s a fun, fashionable point of interest for kitchen cupboards and drawers (though, they’d look great in a bedroom, lounge or bathroom too).

Sandile’s beaded creations are available from selected Game stores countrywide for a very affordable R35. A portion of the profits will be donated to a local charity.
