Highly acclaimed local artist Candice Breitz is in Johannesburg this weekend with her solo exhibition The Woods. Compiled as a film trilogy, viewers are taken to three of the world’s greatest film industries – Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood – for a closer look at their respective young stars and stars in the making. In line with Breitz’ interest in the role that mimicry plays in the formation of selfhood, The Woods presents three installations that focus on the child star and his/ her journey to fame. Shot in Los Angeles, The Audition is the first chapter and features 25 aspirational child actors reciting quotations from motivational ‘ace your audition’ videos. The second chapter, entitled The Rehearsal, was shot in Mumbai and features starlets that have gained recognition but haven’t yet achieved celebrity status. The young Bollywood actors channel mega star Shah Rukh Khan’s words from his own interviews. In the third and final chapter, entitled The Interview, Breitz conducts two lengthy interviews with Nollywood adult stars Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme. Shot in Lagos, the interviews are conducted separately and later edited into a dual channel installation portraying the two actors concurrently. The Interview inverts the previous chapters’ positions on child stars. Where the actors were shadowing the words of adult celebs, the two Nollywood stars are in fact adult actors who have made their names playing child roles. The Woods will be showing from Saturday 23 February to Saturday 30 March 2013 at the Goodman Gallery, 163 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, Johannesburg. Call them on 011-788-1113 for more information.
