Established in 2008, Strauss & Co is at the forefront of the global South African art market. They have become synonymous with auctioning some of South Africa’s most prestigious art and furniture collections. On 21 October 2013 they will be auctioning the private collection of Dr Johan Bolt.
The collection, consisting of 18th and 19th century Cape furniture, Cape brass and copper and Chinese porcelain, has been assembled over the past 25 years. Dr Johan Bolt chose to collect local furniture because he valued, ‘the absolute joy of living with beautiful pieces of functional art and, through them, becoming part of the cultural history of South Africa.’
Amongst some of his most prestigious furniture pieces on auction is a yellowwood and stinkwood inlaid cupboard. This reflects the great skill of Cape craftsmen at the end of the 18th century.
Along with Dr Johan Bolt’s collection, there will also be a selection of silver, jewellery, art and ceramics on auction. Strauss and Co are also proud to have acquired a double-sided Maggie Laubser painting. One side of the painting depicts a shepherd from Maggie’s family farm, one of her favourite subjects. It was however only later discovered that the other side of the painting depicts a modern landscape, making this a key painting in the development of South African modernism. This painting encapsulates the multifaceted nature of Maggie Laubser as an artist.
The auction will take place on Monday, 21 October 2013 from 10am until 8pm at The Vineyard Hotel, Newlands, Cape Town. The collection will be on view from Friday, 18 October to Sunday, 20 October, from 10am to 5pm daily.
