Some of the most important contemporary South African and international art works, including Jane Alexander sculptures, will go on auction today.
Well known for her work The Butcher Boys that underpins the brutal dehumanised forces of apartheid, Jane’s work often contains a strong message. Credited by the jurors of the 2002 DaimlerChrysler Award to giving ‘form to the fragility of a multi-cultural society’, Alexander’s work incorporates ‘exquisite and excruciating details that compel, invade, disturb and complicate perceptions.’
Senior Painting Specialist at Strauss & Co, Ruarc Peffers says, ‘It is a privilege to be dealing with works of such consummate quality and historical importance.’ Both Untitled, a companion work to her famous The Butcher Boys now housed in the Iziko National Gallery, and West Coast African Angel are going on auction.
Other art available includes drawings, watercolours, paintings, sculptures and prints that form an important part of local and international contemporary art.
The auction takes place at The Wanderers Club Ballroom, 21 North Street, Illovo, Johannesburg at 4pm for the daytime session and 8pm for the evening session.
