As we noted in our March 2016 issue, new Sandton-based concept store Collective by Charles Greig Africa and its collection of covetable high-end lifestyle goods has gotten design and fashion fans’ hearts beating a little faster. Truth is, though, it’s not just what’s within the walls of the shop that has us all talking, but what’s on them.
One of the most eye-catching aspects of the interior, which was conceived by Anatomy Design’s Andrea Kleinloog, is an intricate gold-leafed wall featuring imagery of a wild jungle scene. Joburg-born artist Damien Grivas was responsible for creating the masterpiece. Andrea tells us what it took to pull off this feat here:
‘We sourced an amazing old sketch and manipulated it into a wall graphic by amending the composition and foliage almost entirely. Using a projector to cast the sketch onto the wall, Damien and his team painstakingly traced every leaf in a deep red, enhancing the depth of the colour of the gold. Then, pixel by pixel, they applied the gold leaves, which bonded with the red backing, and then lightly brushed the negative away. After this, they worked in the dark jungle green of the store, giving each little leaf more depth. The entire process probably took close to four weeks of intense work.’
We highly recommend that if you find yourself near Nelson Mandela Sqaure, you pop in and view this work of art, which happens to capitalise on the gold trend we’re seeing everywhere this year. The bonus is, you could walk out with something beautiful too.
