Food has the incredible ability to bring people together. Families gather for meals, friends go out for lunch, couples learn about each other over dinner. Just looking at a picture of food or a garden harvest can spark up nostalgia and conjure up memories of being surrounded by loved ones. It is this social connection and camaraderie that gave way to Samesyn, a new brand that prints originally styled food photography on durable raw linen.
‘Samesyn’, which means togetherness in Afrikaans, is the brainchild of food blogger and stylist Elmarie Berry and food photographer Lindy Kriek, who joined forces to immortalise their work on high-quality raw linen. Collaboration is at the very centre of the Samesyn brand – Berry and Kriek say that their designs are ‘inspired by people coming together to make memories’.
Getting the brand off the ground involved a lot of trial and error initially. Styling food and shooting came naturally to the pair, but finding the right kind of linen and printers willing to execute their vision proved quite a task. Eventually, they found the right combination and the result is simply incredible.
Samesyn’s Instagram showcases the myriad ways their ‘art photographs’ can be used: think cushion covers, tablecloths, tea towels, aprons, napkins, wall art… the options are seemingly endless. The robust material that the images are printed on, combined with the manner in which the food has been styled, make Samesyn’s art photographs truly covetable decor pieces.
The brand’s prints vary from light and whimsical to dark and dramatic – imagine bright red pomegranates and figs against black background, bold green leeks and orange carrots on light cream, and even handed-down handwritten and typed recipes printed on vintage-inspired fabric. It’s hard to choose a favourite!
Currently, Samesyn operates from Berry and Kriek’s respective home bases in Stellenbosch and Wellington. Browse through their products on Facebook and Instagram. Orders can be placed at email@example.com.
