Nick Walsh Exhibition

Zimbabwean born and now Johannesburg-based commercial film director Nick Walsh’s exhibition, Looking up, will be on show at the GIBS Art on Campus. Looking up is a celebration of downtown Johannesburg’s architectural heritage and features drawings in monochromatic shades of charcoal and pastel. It was only after several years of living in Johannesburg in the 1980s that Walsh found himself looking up on a deserted portion of Commissioner Street while working on a film shoot. His subsequent love affair with the city is depicted in the show through a series of grand landmark buildings, a 1930s-inspired skyline, art deco influences and unknown jewels of the city. Walsh’s simplistic approach to his drawings draws the eye upwards towards the detail and the magnificence of the buildings. Brian McKechnie, architect, heritage consultant and Provincial Heritage Resources Authority Gauteng (PHRAG) committee member will be the opening speaker. Looking up opens on 29 May 2014 at 6pm at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS Business School), Melville Road, Illovo and will run until 19 June 2014.
