With tennis season now officially well underway and Wimbledon on the horizon, we at House and Leisure are finding plenty of reasons to love the gentleman’s game. Here are a few of them:
1. The Food
Strawberries and cream is the traditional snack of Wimbledon spectators, but can just as easily be enjoyed in front of your television at home. Give this old favourite a delicious twist with our recipe for pomegranate and strawberry trifle… Now that’s what we call a great serve!

2. The Drink
Equally, Pimm’s has always been the traditional drink of Wimbledon spectators, with 230,000 glasses of the drink being consumed on average at the event every year. It might be a bit too chilly here down south to join in with a traditional Pimm’s cup, but this this warm apple Pimm’s recipe makes for an equally delicious winter version!

3. The Local Star
The number 19 seed in the world, Kevin Anderson is the top-ranked South African tennis player and the only African to have made made it to the third round of the French Open at Roland Garros. In 2014 he just missed out to Andy Murray on making it to the quarter finals at Wimbledon, so we’re looking forward to watching him give some other champions a run for their money at the prestigious tournament this year.

4. The Style
Countless fashion lines, like the winter 2015 range at Lacoste, have been inspired by this stylish sport and Anna Wintour herself is a regular crowd member at major tennis matches. Most recently though you can see the colours of the courts reflected in Adidas’s Stan Smith (a former American tennis champion) range of shoes and watches.
5. The Humour
Tennis is known to be a sport with a sense of humour, and players can often be found poking fun at one another between sets – be it Novak Djokovic’s impersonations or Gael Monfils and Laurent Lokoli’s epic dance battle on the courts.
In 1973, professional players Bobby Riggs and Billie-Jean King played a televised friendly match dubbed The Battle of the Sexes. King made her entrance Cleopatra-style on a chair carried by four muscle men, followed by Riggs in a rickshaw pulled by female models. Riggs then presented King with a giant lollipop and she gave him a piglet! We can’t wait for the fun in store this season.
