It’s been almost two years since the world lost one of history’s greatest thinkers, leaders and embodiments of the human spirit. South Africa has since been shrouded by the gravity of this loss, but has also – in the truest essence of Nelson Mandela – tried to encourage and sustain his legacy of forgiveness, joy and ubuntu.
As International Mandela Day comes around on 18 July, we take a look at some of the ways the HL community has shown its love:
Our editor, Naomi Larkin, reflects on the man who ‘inspired not only this great nation, but the whole world’. Read the full article here.
2. Madiba Inspired Art
In the spirit of immortalising the father of our nation, artists both locally and abroad took to the icon for inspiration. There’s been Mandela art exhibitions and Madiba inspired murals, Madiba purses, 46664 inspired apparel and his famous Madiba shirt, a poster project and a royal Mandela floral tribute. There was even a ‘Madiba’s Life in Lego‘ film called ‘Legocy’.
Chef Peter Gottgens, Madiba’s personal chef several years ago, has shared one of Madiba’s favourite dessert recipes with us. This chocolate maize meal pudding is an adaptation of a favourite traditional local dish.
These school journals, created in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, feature inspiring quotes from Madiba, such as ‘It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.’ The Foundation donates to school children one diary for each one sold. Read about them here.
5. Mandela Day Initiatives
Here at HL, in association with #AMPCares, have taken part in the Mandela Day ‘give back’ initiatives over the years. We’ve spent the day painting at Lesedi Day Care Centre and updated a playground at St. Mary’s Primary School. What are you doing this Mandela Day to help your community?
