Colour, heritage and a sense of playfulness are all at the heart of the work coming from Nigerian-born, London-based furniture designer Yinka Ilori, who exhibited at the 2016 London Design Festival. In an installation called Swimming Pool of Dreams, Yinka showed six bold chairs made from different found materials and which straddle the line between art and design. His upcycled creations channel memories of time spent on the Margate coast with his family’s church congregation.
In a culture obsessed with the ‘new’, Yinka holds a deep appreciation for the old and worn-down, transforming discarded and broken chairs into vibrant, colourful pieces of furniture that embody his sunny personality. Combining his Nigerian and British heritage, his work communicates narratives that evoke strong emotional responses, mixing different design traditions and social histories into something unique and heart-warming.
