Gabrielle Goliath Exhibition

Local artist Gabrielle Goliath’s exhibition Faces of War has just opened at Joburg’s Goodman Gallery. In this, her inaugural show with the gallery, Gabrielle looks at the faceless nature of domestic violence through a series of photographic and video portraits. Through her manipulation of the portrait Gabrielle aims to probe the anonymity and silence surrounding this sensitive subject. In her series Faces of People who may or may not be Victims or Perpetrators of Domestic Violence the young Kimberly-born artist manipulates the portraits, casting the faces of possible victims and perpetrators in shadow and presenting the viewer with the question of perception, while her video series Personal Accounts recounts the real-life experiences of victims with the words of their stories deliberately taken out and muted. The exhibition is on now and runs until 15 February 2014 at Goodman Gallery, 163 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, Joburg. For more information, contact the gallery on 011-788-1113. Text Mila Crewe-Brown
