There are lamps that are purely functional and then there are lamps that serve their purpose but also bring something artistically special to a home space. The Flag floor lights from French furniture store Roche Bobois’s new Spring/Summer 2016 collection are the latter.
Though restrained in design, the lamps still command attention and have an eye-catching presence about them, which is appropriate considering they were inspired by the concept of a flag hammered into stone to mark a place with a visible sign.
These unusual creations were designed by Italian duo Alessandro Poli and Francesca De Giorgi, who together design products under the name Servomuto, and feature a luminescent handstitched cotton shade hung to a solid walnut rod inserted into a base made of matte grey Scogliera marble. The octagonal screens, which look a little like sails on a yacht, come in yellow, orange and grey and have been partly pleated for graphic interest.
Though investing in just one would still be a good design choice, they look especially striking in a scattered group adjusted to different heights.
The Flag lamps cost R39,040 each and are available from the Roche Bobois showroom in Cape Town’s Kloof Street.
