In HL’s March issue we introduced you to this season’s chicest fabric trends, from floral bursts to hex appeal. To help you find your favourite fabrics we’ve also compiled a list of some of our most-loved fabric shops in South Africa, as well as upholsterers in Joburg and Cape Town who we trust. This list includes brands that we’ve been using for years, as well as undiscovered gems that offer excellent prices without compromising on quality of workmanship.
Bbellamy&bbellamy: You only have to have met David Bellamy to see that his eponymous shop is no ordinary decor store. Stocking beautifully printed styles and sometimes wild patterns it’s a treasure trove in which you’ll likely find yourself heading to the till struggling to carry the mountain of designs that you’ve discovered you simply can’t live without. Located in Muizenberg. Call 084-314-5741 for more info.
Hertex Fabrics: Offering a huge range of fabrics and wallpapers, a star fabric collaboration (John Jacob x Hertex = Studio H; Sarah Ord x Hertex = Tesserae Collection), designer rugs and a supplier for some major international designer brands, Hertex is definitely a favourite stop for HL when looking for great threads. The friendly service doesn’t hurt, either. The 30-year-old brand now has 11 showrooms in South Africa and it extends internationally with agents in places as far flung as Russia. Call 0860-HERTEX (437839) for showroom contact details.
Home Fabrics/Fabric Library: The draw for Home Fabrics/Fabric Library, who joined up in 2011, is that it’s a great source not only for high-end designer fabrics but affordable cuts too. Showrooms in Midrand, Joburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, PE and Durban.
Mavromac: An importer of many major international brands, expect to find impeccable quality and taste at this fine store. It launched its own collection of local ranges some time back in an effort to focus the South African market to design-conscious fabrics at competitive local prices. Showrooms in Joburg, Cape Town, Durban and PE.
Romo South Africa: Romo is a UK-based company that, for over 110 years, has been producing excellent furnishing and upholstery fabrics. With its range of highly praised wallpapers, fabrics and wallcoverings, Romo is an international brand that is synonymous with style. The Romo Group consists of six design houses, namely Kirkby Design, Mark Alexander, Villa Nova, Zinc Textile, Romo Basics and Black Edition, all stocked by Romo South Africa. Showrooms in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with brand ambassadors in JHB, CT and Durban. (Don’t forget, you can enter our competition online to win a Romo Fabrics voucher worth R5 000).
St Leger & Viney: When looking for high-quality and exclusive designer patterns for your home, St Leger & Viney is the answer. It’s become a trusted name in the little black books of designers everywhere and, with 40 top fabric and wallpaper brands as well as its own fabric collections, you only have to walk into one of their five showrooms, in Joburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, PE and Durban, to feel as if you’ve landed in textile heaven.
Stuart Graham Furnishing Fabrics: As a large independent retailer, and with branches in all major national cities, Stuart Graham has a wide range of choices at competitive prices. Also at this company is Prestigious Textiles, an international brand with high quality textiles and delicate designs. Showrooms in Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Pretoria, Joburg, Durban and Bloem.
