Simone Biggs is a freelance South African interior designer who believes that numeracy and literary skills in South African children can be improved through innovative design. Her recently launched EDU chair, featured at the 2014 Design Indaba Expo, is a multi-functional piece created to encourage children to learn through play. The chair is made up of a wooden framework with a netted rope seat and metal back resembling an abacus. Available in three colours, it allows children to practice counting, spelling, build words and perform basic arithmetic. The game checkers is also included for added stimulation. Alphabetical blocks and basic maths symbols are stored in the bottom of the chair when not in use, making this not only an educational tool, but also a seating option.
