Young South African jewellery designer Carla Maxine Kruger has always been fascinated by South Africa’s colourful past. She often draws her inspiration from historical events and reinterprets them into contemporary jewellery pieces. Her masters exhibition titled The Collar and the Cuff: a Contemporary Representation of Symbols of Power and Oppression at the Seventeenth Century Cape of Good Hope is a reflection of colonialism and slave trade in the Cape. According to Carla the collar and the cuff symbolise the relationship between power and oppression. She hopes that her contemporary interpretation will invoke critique and create a platform where the power and oppression in the Cape and South Africa can be contested. The exhibition opens on 22 January 2014 at the Slee Gallery in Dorp Street, Stellenbosch. It runs until 26 January. For more information, visit the Slee Gallery’s Facebook page.
