Looking to develop your art collection? Specialist fine art auctioneers Aspire Art Auctions have been tasked with a unique sale as their first assignment of 2018 – selling the contents of the exquisite Deodar House in Illovo, Johannesburg.
This inaugural sale will be realised through a hugely eclectic and stylish range of fine art, furniture, decorative arts, watches, jewellery and wine, with the entire proceeds of the auction being donated to seed a dedicated South African Leukemia Fund. The new charity provides financial assistance to underprivileged children suffering from leukemia who have no alternative means of receiving or funding treatment.
What can you expect to see? The beautiful gardens surrounding Deodar House overlook the Wanderers Golf Course and contain innovative and influential outdoor sculptures. Leading these is a landmark work by William Kentridge and Gerhard Marx, which is a version of the famous ‘Fire Walker’ sculpture in downtown Johannesburg. Other major sculptures include some signature pieces by Angus Taylor, the internationally renowned Dylan Lewis, Willem Boshoff and Johannesburg’s ‘sculptor-laureate’, Edoardo Villa.
The fine art collection boasts impeccable modern and contemporary paintings which will be available for sale on the auction. Paintings vary from the exquisite Irma Stern still life from 1950, ‘Hydrangeas and St Joseph lilies in the artist’s handmade ceramic jug’ to a John Meyer landscape and an excellent recent work by Robert Hodgins.
Among the other auction highlights is an extensive selection of furniture, from antique French and Spanish provincial pieces to the cutting edge contemporary designs of Paul Smith and Kartell. The jewellery selection is largely comprised of a wide range of exquisitely cut and designed gold, diamond and tanzanite pieces, while the selection of wine comprises of rare local vintages and Paul Sauer blends from the Kanonkop Estate, as well as some elegant and collectible French wines. An absolute must-attend event for every design lover.
