Publik, a much-loved neighbourhood hangout with bars in Joburg and Cape Town, shares their pick of artisanal red wines to warm up our winter nights.

Dokter&Misses Hourglass

The ancient Greeks believed that health is defined by effort, followed by restoration – and, of course, they found nothing quite as restorative as a glass of red wine. Who are we to argue with history? A red glass of wine after work can be the best way to unwind after a long day, especially when your bar cart is within reach of your home office.

Publik, known for their choice selection of artisan wines and their popular wine bars, has shared their pick of wintery red wines. Take a look and start adding to your post-lockdown wish list.

Five wintery red wines to try

Hand-selected by David Cope, founder of Publik, these soft, delicious red wines are perfectly suited to settling into your evenings.

Dancho Luka Pinot Noir 2019

An incredible quality, light and fruity style Pinot Noir that tastes like it's from a classic cool-climate region, but in fact comes from the Polkadraai Valley in Stellenbosch. The grapes are farmed by Danie Carinus (of Carinus Family Wines) and winemaker is Lukas Van Loggerenberg.

Price per bottle: R200

Thistle & Weed ‘Knapsekerel’ 2019

Working with a biodynamically farmed Cabernet Franc vineyard means that a sustainable, environmentally friendly process is followed in getting these grapes to harvest each year. While that makes your conscience feel good, you'll feel even better when you taste what winemaker Stephanie Wiid has produced with these grapes in the cellar. Soft, smooth and with subtle spices, it's a delicious lighter version of Cab Franc.

Natte Valleij Cinsault 2018

Okay, a warning: this may be the most drinkable Cinsault on the market and at a very friendly price-point. This blend is produced with grapes from four different vineyards and is made by winemaker Alex Milner at his farm in Stellenbosch (which is also an incredibly beautiful event venue). It's delicate, lusciously fruity, easy on the palate and, needless to say, very drinkable.

Price per bottle: R150

The Horsemen ‘Red Rider’ Carignan 2018

Viticulturist guru Jaco Engelbrecht and winemaker Tremayne Smith (from The Blacksmith wines) combine their talents to produce this limited edition range. The wine is made from exceptional single vineyards Jaco identifies and produces with minimal intervention in the cellar by Tremayne. Carignan is a grape of Spanish origin known for high tannins, but here it has a gentle texture and ample red berry fruit notes.

Price per bottle: R225

Gabrielskloof The Blend 2017

If you want a reliable, well-rounded style of red to offset any lockdown anguish, you'd struggle to find a better value classic Bordeaux-style red blend to stock the shelves with. Made by winemaker Peter-Allan Finlayson (who also makes Crystallum wines), this wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend that offers all the structure, density and full-flavoured character you'd expect from a wine at twice the price. Buy by the case, and drink with abandon!
