On the forested grounds of Château Raray castle in Northern France stands a century-old oak tree adorned in what design studio Atelier LAVIT calls a 'tailored wooden dress'. They are of course referring to ORIGIN Treehouse, a meticulously constructed one-bedroom cabin that was created for French hotel group Cabanes des Grands Chênes and can be rented on Airbnb. Inspired by the way in which birds construct their nests using twigs and branches, ORIGIN Treehouse features a horizontally-slatted Douglas pine facade that simultaneously provides shelter and privacy while allowing the build to merge seamlessly into its natural surrounds.

The exterior aesthetic continues to the interior, where poplar-clad rooms are home to pieces of furniture with fine horizontal slats that were custom-made by Atelier LAVIT. Laid out around the central oak tree trunk, the 23m2 octagonal space features a living area, bedroom, dressing room and bathroom, all of which are flooded with natural light thanks to the inclusion of large windows that look out onto the wooded landscape. Two glass sliding doors open the living area to the treehouse entrance and patio, where a ladder leads up to a secluded rooftop terrace shielded by the exterior's wooden cladding.

This feeling of seclusion is heightened by the fact that the treehouse can only be accessed via a raised wooden walkway suspended 10m above the ground between ORIGIN and another oak tree 30m away. Here, a wooden platform boasts a heated spa and lounge area, which is just another way Cabanes des Grands Chênes has ensured that ORIGIN Treehouse is the perfect forested retreat.
