Talking Summer Outdoor Living with Interior Decorator Sumari Krige
Interior decorator and owner of La Grange Interiors, Sumari Krige shares her favourite ways to make beautiful summers evenings count.
The slow life: waking without an alarm, two-hour yoga sessions, long walks with the dogs, lazy lunches in the company of friends, book after brilliant book and wine from 4pm. That is a life we can get behind.
We asked decorator and owner of La Grange Interiors, Sumari Krige, a couple of questions about the essentials that make those beautiful summers evenings count.
If you only have a 3mx5m size balcony. What are the key pieces you’d need to make it into a favourite space to spend time at?
Sumari Krige: You need comfortable seating/lounging to make any place a favourite lingering spot – go with either a three-seater sofa, a decent-sized coffee table and one occasional chair (or two large luxurious daybeds) and sidetables paired with a small bistro table and chairs. With a smaller space, style using lanterns, pots, plants and glassware.
And if you have a larger 10mx10m patio/balcony, what are the added luxuries to make it into a beautiful outdoor entertaining space?
SK: If you have the extra space, it is a must to have an outdoor dining option in our exceptional climate. Go with a solid teak table and chairs (alternatively, synthetic woven rattan is durable and looks great). I would suggest a generous designated lounge area with a combination of modular sofa pieces and armchairs. An outdoor rug and gorgeous, and woven all-weather fabrics and accessories help to blend the interior and exterior living spaces and create contrasting layers of materials and textures.
What will be your summer drink of choice this season?
SK: Cucumber-and-mint-infused water for the hottest days and pink G&Ts for beautiful balmy sunsets!
Stemless or classic wine glasses?
SK: Tough question – I’m always looking for something new and different – so I can completely appreciate a stemless wine glass and the thought behind it. But I love a classic wine glass!
Decanted wine, or straight from the bottle?
SK: Keep it in the bottle. But I’m no wino, so what do I know?
In terms of tablescapes and entertaining, what key pieces will be seen when you host drinks after work?
SK: Lanterns, tealights, candles, lots of plants and wild greenery in interesting glassware, sculptures and ceramics. Textured materials such as teak, metal, rattan and soft woven fabrics.
Would you choose…
A: Mix and match – high-sheen metals with unvarnished wood, patterns and prints, colours and neutrals.
B: Classic, tonal, textural, calm.
SK: Definitely A.
