Located in Foreshore, The Onyx is an innovative, mixed-use building that is managed in part by Newmark Hotels, Residences, Reserves & Lodges. Originally the Nedbank building in Heerengracht Street, it was completely transformed by one of Cape Town’s leading architects, Robert Silke and luxury property development company, Signatura. Now it is a contemporary hotel and residential complex that is the epitome of luxe city living. Just by looking at the building's exterior you can see how impressive it is. The white aluminium-clad balconies are contrasted with slick black surfaces that create captivating curves, which fits the innovative space perfectly.
Whether your are staying as a hotel guest, or living in The Onyx as a resident, you are treated to superb high-quality facilities. Residential units are mixed with hotel rooms so everyone can enjoy the same level of service. The interiors of the common areas and the apartments is modern elegance at its finest. Velvet and rounded furniture introduce pops of colour to a predominantly monochromatic space. Geometric mirrors and contemporary art adorn the walls, and the views of the surrounding city and Table Mountain create an exciting ambience.
There are 102 apartment-style hotel rooms, including studios, deluxe studios, one-bedroom apartments, deluxe one-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom apartments. Each studio and apartment features top-end furnishings, finishes and comforts, including a fully-equipped kitchenette. The beds are firm, the showers are a dream and simple tasks like making a cup of tea feels like a dream when you are in such a beautiful place.
There are a number of establishments and facilities that make staying at the The Onyx convenient, and they are all located on the 4th floor. There is a gym, which residents and hotel guests have access to 24 hours a day. For those who want to relax, the Sanctuary Spa offers a number of revitilising treatments using amazing products. From a wax to a steam to a massage, you can treat yourself or a loved one to an indulgent pampering session.
Open-air bar and lounge areas are allow you to take in the views. To account for the hectic wind that the Cape Town CBD can experience, The Onyx has an indoor/outdoor pool with a state-of-the-art divider. When the weather is good, it divider is open, and when it is not, the divider allows people to enjoy a blissful swim in the safety of the indoors, and those brave souls who want to relax in the pool outside can do so too. The pools is also heated at a constant temperature, so no matter the season, the water is always perfect.
A little different to your average hotel eatery, MRKT (pronounced market) offers deliciously different meals that you can enjoy in the restaurant or via room service on request. It is the place where hotel guests at The Onyx can enjoy breakfast, but it is also an inner-city restaurant that anyone can visit. With access via The Onyx and the street, people can pop in and grab a coffee or light meal. There is also a bakery that serves fresh, artisanal baked goods, harvest-inspired buffet offerings and a shop where you can buy condiments, ceramics and souvenirs.
The interior is light and minimalist, but like The Onyx, sophisticated , modern and inviting. Keeping in line with the rest of the establishment, there are plug and USB points on tables and bar areas, so you can sit and work while you enjoy a meal.
In addition to the MRKT, an Asian-inspired eatery will opening at the The Onyx early in 2019. The Onyx's namesake is a rare and striking dark gemstone, and Newmark Hotels did not only model their latest project after it aesthetically, they ensured that every part of the experience is a gem as well.
