Shop the Look of this Sophisticated Kitchen
Situated on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, this beachside bolthole boasts an alluring modern aesthetic, with a gorgeous kitchen to match.
You know the old adage: the kitchen is the heart of the home. And what better way to reflect this sentiment than with a special House and Leisure Kitchen Issue, wherein we showcase five magnificent homes with kitchens that stand apart from the rest?
One such kitchen is the sophisticated offering of a glamorous beachside bolthole on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard. Renovated by gallerist and interior designer Dylan Thomaz, the home boasts a modern Mediterranean feel throughout, complete with layered textures, natural materials and a well thought-out colour palette. Its position on a rocky cliffside overlooking Clifton played a huge part in the home's – and the kitchen's – aesthetic, with Thomaz choosing to incorporate the rocky surrounds into the design. 'We wanted to accentuate the boulder,' he says. 'We framed it in the kitchen, and at night, it lights right up. It's quite spectacular.'
This inclusion of stone can also be seen in the kitchen's heavy marble island, which both reflects the boulder outdoors and acts as a grounding focal point in the space. 'Through the whole project, the homeowner was prescriptive about only a few things, and one of those things was the stone,' says Thomaz, admiring the island's honed finish and tiny crystalline fragments that make it all the more unique. Due to the size and weight of the slab, which was sourced from WOMAG, the installation process was a tricky one that resulted in a last-minute decision to add a narrow, off-centre section of blue tiling in its surface. 'It ended up becoming this feature that we both loved and serves as a different kind of detail,' says Thomaz. 'It acts like a serving tray, but it also adds more authenticity to the house.’ Detailing such as black brick flooring and brass metallic accents contribute to the kitchen's luxurious feel, all of which is complemented by white tiles and classic cabinetry.
While it's unlikely that you have a perfectly positioned boulder outside your kitchen window or room for an expansive marble island, you can get the look of this cooking space with a few carefully chosen add-ons.
