1. Prince Albert Gallery & Café
Framed by its iconic arches, Prince Albert Gallery exhibits a variety of works by artists from all over the country, including creatives in the area. After sunset, one of its upper rooms becomes the Gallery Café, a fine-dining restaurant with dishes focused on local ingredients and flavours. Think duck-liver pâté with soetkaroo jelly, or grilled kudu fillet with Merlot, thyme and juniper-berry sauce.

Karoo Kombuis’ menu hasn’t altered in years – and probably never will, because patrons flock to this eatery to indulge in its delicious, old-school boerekos. Booking is essential, and the atmosphere is homely and fun.

4. Renu-Karoo Nursery Shop
The Nursery Shop is one aspect of the Renu-Karoo project, which seeks to repair mining and grazing damage in the arid Karoo region by developing indigenous seed orchards and local skills. Whether you’re after a souvenir succulent or a tree aloe for the garden, you’re bound to find something in its diverse array of local plants and seeds, herbs, fruit trees and veggie seedlings.

Looking for a really luxurious gift for someone back home? Avoova’s handcrafted and bespoke decor pieces feature a mantle of ostrich eggshells and other high-end pieces made in the Karoo. You may have seen its creations in its Western Cape showrooms, and now Avoova has opened an additional store in Prince Albert, close to its factory.

6. Prince Albert Olives
Admire some of the Karoo’s glorious bounty at the beautiful estate that houses Prince Albert Olives. Here, father-and-son farmers Fred and Hein Badenhorst tend to their olive orchards and produce impeccable extra-virgin olive oil.

7. True Karoo Gallery Shop
An authentic and site-specific art and curio store, almost everything at True Karoo Gallery Shop is handmade by owner and artist Trudy Brain. Expect items fashioned from repurposed bottles, wire and wood, as well as exquisite wreaths.

8. Gay’s Guernsey Dairy
There’s a good reason why Gay’s Guernsey Dairy is renowned beyond Prince Albert: the dairy is stacked to the ceiling with award-winning wheels of cheese that will delight discerning turophiles. Experience a tasting, check out the happy cows on the farm and, of course, buy cheese directly from the dairy shop, which also stocks a range of other local products.
