Playing with Clay: The Organic Creations of Klomp Ceramics
We caught up with the creative behind Klomp Ceramics to find out where the inspiration behind her distinctive style comes from.
Ceramicist Alexia Klompje creates a range of bespoke homeware and jewellery from her spacious studio in Paarden Eiland. We caught up with the creative behind Klomp Ceramics to find out where the inspiration behind her distinctive style comes from.
Having dabbled with clay her entire life, ceramics naturally became Alexia’s profession of choice. After suffering from a brain tumour six years ago, she found solace and comfort in clay – using the medium as a way to express how she was feeling. Not considering herself as much of a ceramicist as a storyteller, designer and creative, Alexia uses clay as a tool to connect, inspire and express herself.
Klomp pieces have a distinctive organic shape, something that Alexia describes as coming into being as clay frees her from being a perfectionist. Natural clay is an organic, free material – the spirit of which she looks to celebrate when working with it. Inspired by the alchemy of cermics and the way that one can only control the outcome of a piece to a certain degree, Alexia enhoys that fact that there is always something left to chance. Through allowing her pieces to tell a story through their organic form, each Klomp piece shows that Alexia’s hands were involved in their making. She cites that this process creates a beautiful connection between maker and owner.
Operating out of a bright and airy ex-industrial space in Cape Town’s Paarden Eiland, Klomp Ceramics shares the studio with fellow creatives Maria Magdalena Atelier – an illustrator – and jeweller Anna from Smith.
It's wonderful to share a space with creative women. We support, advise and inspire each other everyday and I think that makes us all better creatives, and women
Those looking to own a Klomp piece of their own can find Alexia’s creations via her online store klompceramics.com – that also offers worldwide shipping. Klomp also stocks various shops, a list of which can be found on their site’s stockist’s page.
