Describing the mood that she wants to evoke with her latest jewellery pieces, designer Katherine Pichulik references the feeling of getting lost while gazing at sunlight on a water’s surface. ‘As a child you were present, involved, immersed…’ she says. ‘Here on this earth, but imaginative and magical. I wanted the collection to feel this way.’ We think the resulting PICHULIK collection – named Joy! – contains some of her very loveliest work yet.
The Joy! Collection, produced for the Spring/Summer 2019 season, is centred on capturing a sense of childlike imagination – and in particular, the fresh and pure take on the world that little girls have. It’s all about ‘the window before womanhood,’ says Pichulik. ‘A pure and beautiful space to create and explore our identity prior to the societal conditioning we experience later in life. It is the instinctive, jubilant expression of ourselves and how we relate to objects gleaned around us as symbols of sentiment and adornment. An emergence from childhood but not yet tainted by the expectations of being a woman. It’s a magical space – one to recall and revisit.’
The jewellery pieces in the new collection express the pure simplicity of childlike play via a mix of seemingly unrelated materials: glass beads, shells, semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls and wood. In all of the designs, sophistication meets spirited effervescence, and evocative echoes of the childlike practice of adornment with natural objects and items foraged off the beach and from nature are created.
Our favourite pieces include the small sea shells, which have been cast in brass, gold plated and in some cases finished with crystals, then fashioned into delicate yet substantial earrings – such as the Memory Abalone earrings – and pendants like the Hypathia Pendant. Also utterly charming are the new Joy! Bracelets, which make great gifts to exchange with friends. We want one in every colour, and quite possibly a couple of the necklaces to match too.
And then there is the clothing: for the sixth PICHULIKbyNadya collection, designer Nadya von Stein also focused on the quest to find one’s inner child. Combining striped cottons and organic hemp linen, in a range of shades of turquoise, peach, white and red, the collection is, as Von Stein says, ‘about owning your joy, finding what you love and finding the joy in it.’ We love the head-to-toe look of stripes – finished with a Crystal Birch custom striped hat – and a gorgeous red floaty dress that is perfect for the party season.
