By now we're all well aware that Johannesburg has more to offer than its concrete jungle – but did you know that the City of Gold boasts numerous picnic spots?

Both in and around the city, visitors and locals can while away spring days under shady trees with a full spread of snacks in the company of family and friends.

Three top Joburg picnic spots – plus one in Pretoria

Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens 

Voted as the best place to get back to nature in Gauteng for nine years in a row, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens is a haven of thriving greenery, making it an excellent choice for a Joburg picnic.

Founded in 1982, the garden is home to 600 naturally occuring plant species and a well-known waterfall – Witportjie Waterfall – along with an abundance of wildlife. There are over 220 bird species to be found within the gardens, for starters. Other animals, such as small antelope, jackals and reptiles, can also be found here.

Along the rocky cliffside near Witportjie Waterfall, a pair of Verreaux's eagles can frequently be spotted. Walter Sisulu Botancial Gardens has been home to these large birds of prey for a recorded 30 years, with their nests being located near the waterfall. To spot the majestic eagles, visitors are advised to bring along a pair of binoculars.

And if you are in the mood to hike before you picnic, there are a few trails available within the gardens and several lookout points on these offer panoramic views of the reserve.

Cost: Entrance to the gardens costs R55 per adult, R15 per scholar, R30 per student (with a valid student card), children under the age of six enter free of charge and pensioners enter for free on Tuesday. Visitors are advised that entrance fees may change when the gardens host concernts or events.

Gillooly's Farm

Escape to the countryside at Gillooly's Farm, where you'll find vast green spaces for family picnics and braai-friendly spaces too. 

Named after the owner, James Gillooly, the farm is 44 hectares in size and is known for its walking trails and as a family-friendly venue.

If you didn't pack a basket for your Joburg picnic at Gillooly's, a restaurant is located on the farm for visitors and if you would like to braai, remember that you need to bring along your own braai stand.

With over 50 bird species including house sparrow, reed cormorant and more, the farm is another must-visit for bird-watchers.

Modderfontein Reserve 

Operated by the Endangered Wildlife Trust , the Modderfontein Reserve aims to protect our natural flora and fauna along with encouraging public interaction in spaces of nature.

It is the second-largest private park in Gauteng, with 275 hectares to explore, and includes a number of dams, walking trails and grass-covered hills.

With rolling green lawns, the Modderfontein Reserve is an ideal spot for a Joburg picnic, and the perfect place to unplug and breathe in some fresh air as you while away the day outdoors.

Cost: A conservation fee is applicable to every entrance: R30 per adult and R15 per child. Vistors are advised that the reserve is closed on Mondays.

Magnolia Dell Park

Located in Pretoria, the Magnolia Dell Park offers a picturesque picnic spot with a small dam alongside a range of willow trees.

The park is also home to Huckleberry's Cafe, which offers light lunches and hearty breafkast options. Conveniently located in close proximity to the city, Magnolia Dell is a popular picnicking spot for locals. 

The park is pet friendly, so you bring your furry four-legged friends to enjoy the day out with you. Aside from being a lovely picnic spot, the park is known for hosting a range of arts and crafts markets.
