Scenically located in Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo, Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa is a dreamily luxurious five-star retreat.
Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa is the Ultimate Bush Escape
There's something so magical about the African bushveld. Its vast expanses of land beckon us from our urban habitats with the allure of abundant vegetation, majestic wildlife, clean air and starry skies. From camping in the great outdoors to staying in a self-service chalet, there are myriad ways to experience such splendour, but there are few better options than Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa in Limpopo.
Located in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive or 45-minute flight from Johannesburg, Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa showcases the best that the bush has to offer in a luxuriously laidback, five-star setting. The adventure begins the moment you reach the game reserve entrance, where you're met by one of Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa's expert rangers before being driven through the park to the main villa, enjoying a plethora of animal sightings en route.
Upon arrival, you're treated to a warm welcome from the gracious team of staff, who encourage you to swap your luggage for a refreshing cocktail as you take in the spectacular surrounds. And spectacular they surely are, as the main building of Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa overlooks a stretch of picturesque bushveld complete with a watering hole frequented by wildlife such as zebra, elephant, warthog, impala and rhino.
For an even better view of the animals who have stopped for a drink, the main lodge's underground hide is an ingenious option that's ideal for photography enthusiasts. Located at the end of an underground corridor, the structure is built around the waterhole and includes ground-level windows that give you an opportunity to see game from a unique perspective. It's the perfect way to marvel at an array of wildlife up close, day or night, in a cleverly concealed setting that blends into the landscape.
This connection to the environment was a major consideration for Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa co-owner Myriam Vogel, the Dutch designer behind the interiors. 'Here, in Africa, it’s all about texture, whether from the plants, animals or earth,' says Vogel, who incorporated raw materials, organic finishes and a neutral palette into both indoor and outdoor spaces. Notable design elements include bespoke wooden tables by Pierre Cronje, sculptural lights by Anthea and Michael Methven, wooden Nguni head coat hooks by Vogel Design, and tactile luxury wallpaper by Élitis and Arte. 'From the wallpapers to the natural wood accents, the interiors instil a feeling of the environment so that you want to reach out and experience the space you are in.'
This organic theme runs throughout Mohondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, which comprises two deluxe suites and a honeymoon suite (all sleep two people each); an executive suite and a family suite (each sleep four people); and an exclusive private villa (sleeps six). Just a short walking distance from the main lodge, the villa offers the ultimate in luxury bush accomodation, with two exquisite en suite bedrooms and a grand master suite complete with outdoor shower. It's all-inclusive nature means that your every need is catered to, and here you're treated to daily meals cooked by a private chef; an extensive selection of local drinks; a butler and housekeeping service; and game drives with your own personal ranger. There's even a gym, yoga room and heated pool set into an expansive wrap-around deck that offers magnificent views of the pleins beyond and the watering hole in the distance.
Included in Mhondoro Lodge & Villa's facilities is a spa, gym, children's centre, curio shop, star-gazing deck with telescope, and heated chlorine-free swimming pools –the latter of which are often frequented by curious, thirsty elephants. These added extras all contribute to the owners' aim to create a relaxed home-away-from home for their guests. 'Our design captures a sense of home so that you can embrace the bush, the animals and the atmosphere without having to rush around or go on a game drive every day,' says co-owner Frank Vogel. 'We’d like to think that we have created home for everyone here at Mhondoro.'
