The Legend of Kraken Black Spiced Rum
Bold, piquant and delicious, Kraken Black Spiced Rum is the perfect example of why the spirit is on the rise in South Africa.
Once, on a dark and stormy night, a ship stocked with one of the largest quantities of black spiced rum ever to be brought over from the Caribbean never reached its destination. No one knows for sure what happened, but it is believed that the ship was attacked by the dreaded Kraken, the most feared of all the sea monsters. Barrels carrying this black spiced rum fell off the ship and drifted in the sea, with the spirit eventually being renamed The Kraken Black Spiced Rum in tribute to the monster's unchallengeable power and might.
This may just be a story, but the excitement and enjoyment it makes you feel is real. Who doesn't enjoy the folklore about pirates and the sea monsters they have stumbled upon (most likely with a lot of rum in their systems)? It's that feeling that The Kraken Black Spiced Rum wants to stir up in you, which is why the brand has created an entire narrative around the kraken, including entertaining videos that explain the mythical creature and the encounters people might have had with it. This spirit is captured in every aspect of the brand, from the packaging to the drink itself.
The Kraken Black Spiced Rum is now available in South Africa thanks to Truman & Orange, who imports interesting premium drinks from all over the world.
Kraken Black Spiced Rum
Like all good rum that pirates enjoyed, The Kraken Black Spiced Rum is distilled in the Caribbean from naturally sweet molasses. It is then blended with 13 different secret spices that create notes of vanilla, cinnamon, citrus, allspice, cloves, nutmeg and peppercorn. The result is a strong, rich drink that is delicious with mixers, or enjoyed as is. In keeping with the spirit of the rum's 'origins', the House and Leisure team decided to try the rum in a Dark & Stormy.
Rum is not the drink preference of some members of the team, but everyone who tried The Kraken Black Spiced Rum thoroughly enjoyed it. It has all the elements that we know and love in rum, but tastes and feels elevated. It's sweet, but not sickly sweet, very smooth, and the spiciness comes through perfectly.
It is also packaged beautifully. The bottle shape feels like one pirates would have drank from centuries ago, and the label looks like an old piece of parchment bearing a kraken illustration.
Rum on the Rise
Rum is becoming ever more popular around the world, including South Africa. According to Truman & Orange, over 7.2 million bottles of rum was consumed in the country in 2018. Interestingly, 45% of those bottles were flavoured rum. This was a key reason why Truman & Orange decided to bring this premium rum in to SA.
Rowan Leibbrandt, founding owner of Truman & Orange, says, 'The typically syrupy South African palate coupled with our seemingly unquenchable thirst for new, interesting, premium drinks bode well for introducing a premium drink like The Kraken here. It’s also a really fun brand that, like South Africans, doesn’t take itself too seriously. Lastly, it tells a roaringly good story – and we all know that South Africans love a good story!'
