join us in celebrating homegrown ingenuity at the 2018 Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair

The Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair has established itself as a landmark on South Africa’s design calendar. This year attendees can expect a magical setting with tented areas, retail stands and larger than life landscaping. In honour of everything homegrown and handmade, House and Leisure will collaborate with Mozambique born textile designer, Wacy Zacarias on the Well Made in Africa special project, which has become a highlight of this much anticipated event. Zacarias specialises in custom textile prints and artisanal textiles for the fashion and homeware industries. Zacarias’ vision is to put African textiles on the global map. Currently, the African print textile industry is worth more than 5 billion USD, yet African artisans see only about 15% of the revenue, with determination and her natural flair for design, Zacarias is part of a movement to change the status quo. Well Made in Africa at the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair will bring together the work of five African designers who are skilled at reinterpreting traditional crafts as modern design pieces. They are Waya Waya, Ruum Gallery, Yemi Awosile, LRNCE, and Epicure. Together with House and Leisure, Zacarias will curate the work of these creatives in a way that tells the African story, the African way. About the exhibition, Zacarias said: 'As Africans, we have stood by for many years and watched our stories being told by others, often creating false narratives or clichés at best... In recent years, there has been an African design revolution in the form of storytelling, where we see many designers crafting their stories, often aiming to preserve more than just African crafts.' This year, the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair will take place from 12 to 14 October on the rooftop of Hyde Park Corner shopping centre in Johannesburg.
