Summer

Previously, we chatted to Sumari Krige about her ideal outdoor space. This week we talk to interior architect Dylan Thomaz about how he will sit back and make that extra hour or two of daylight on a blissful summer's evening count – what are his essentials for summer living?

If you had only a 3x5m size balcony, what are the key pieces you’d use to make it a favourite outside space?

A simple rectangular bar table surrounded with greenery and candles.

And if you had a larger 10x10m patio or balcony, which luxuries would you add to create an alluring outdoor entertainment area?

Make an attractive seating zone with couches, occasional chairs, a fireplace, candles, simple yet sophisticated decor – and great wine.

What will be your drink of choice this season?

A chilled glass of Chardonnay.

Stemless or classic wine glasses?

Always classic.

Decant the wine, or keep it in the bottle?

If the branding is elegant, keep it in the bottle on ice.

In terms of tablescapes and entertaining, what key pieces will your guests see when you host drinks after work?

Candles, simple yet beautiful flowers and textural elements in the glassware, snack dishes or vessels.

Please choose:

A: Mix and match – high-sheen metals with unvarnished wood, patterns and prints, colours and neutrals

B: Classic, tonal, textural, calm

Hmmmmmm, B.
