We've had our eye on Houtlander for some time. The pared-back aesthetic and simple yet modern style of Houtlander has made the brand a favourite of South Africa’s design and décor fans.  We were excited to learn that the brand’s founders, Phillip Hollander and Stephen Wilson, have released a new and expanded range.

Houtlander is known for giving traditional shapes contemporary treatments, and the new Rattan and Milk Stool ranges continue in this vein.

'The milk stool is one of the most basic furniture pieces, first made by carpenters who would turn a piece of wood with a lathe and attach three legs,' explains Hollander co-founders and designers Phillip Hollander and Stephen Wilson. Resultantly, Houtlander has created a range based on interpretations of this classic shape.

The most recent of these product extensions, the rattan range, draws both on the heritage of Cape Dutch furniture in South Africa and the international trend favouring simple, artisanal, crafted pieces. Rattan definitely has a nostalgic quality for many South Africans.

One of the main highlights from the range is the (in)tension table, which contrasts dark oak with a rattan finish. The effect is timeless but also somehow contemporary.

In the words of Phillip and Stephen, 'It’s all about taking an uncomplicated product and adding a new dimension through great design'.

Houtlander won South African Designer of the Year at 100% Design last month as well as last year’s award for Best Furniture Design. To shop the range and for more information, visit www.houtlander.co.za
