Hot Office: Low Key
Text Mila Crewe-Brown Photographs Aubrey Jonsson Styling Leana Schoeman In addition to our March 2014 Office feature, we’ve lined up a few extra spaces we know you’ll love. Based in one of Johannesburg’s leafy hilltop suburbs, this fresh and contemporary office belonging to a non-governmental organisation is all about calm. ‘It had to feel breezy, clean and youthful,’ explains interior designer Astrid van der Heim who crafted a predominantly white scheme with shots of juicy colour to energise. Staff members, who required both private spaces from which to work as well as a large boardroom for regular client meetings, were all involved in the creative process. The result is a deceptively simple layout based around a central pause area with a series of sleek glass divisions, which break the space up without reducing light. With sustainability high on the client’s list of priorities the office has adopted a recycling policy as well as passive lighting systems to reduce energy consumption, while a collection of cherished handmade artworks hints at their devotion to supporting local. At once slick and stylish, it’s also functional and unpretentious.
