#HLDiscovery: Olive Oil, Gin and Wine

Here's what's on the #HLDiscovery radar this week.

On this week's #HLDiscovery list we look at some of the latest releases on the food and drinks scene. From new ranges to new products (by a local celebrity, no less), here is what has us talking.

1. Fizz and Fudge Summer Pairing

Stellenbosch Hills have added a sweet pairing experience for their visitors to enjoy: Polkadraai sparkling wine coupled with creamy, buttery fudge for their Fizz and Fudge summer pairing. The wines on offer include the Polkadraai Pinot Noir Sparkling Rosé 2018 and Polkadraai Sauvignon Blanc Brut 2018. The fudge, which is made by Basilei Handcrafted Confectionary, is the perfect companion to the wines. The pairing is on offer at the Stellenbosch Hills Tasting Room until February 2019 and costs R40 per person.

2. Jin Gin

South African musician and influential foodie J'Something has launched his very own craft gin called Jin Gin. He teamed up with Beverage Emporium and local craft gin experts Craft Link to make a range that boasts great flavour and personality, and inspired by J'Something's South African and Portuguese heritage. The range includes olive and honey; orange, rooibos and honey; and tomato and sweet piquant pepper. Available at selected Pick 'n Pay and Ultra bottle stores at R390 per bottle.

3. Tokara Unfiltered Olive Oil

Enjoy Tokara's remarkable olive oil in its purest form. A particularly special product, Tokara's olive-oil master chose not refine it so it could retain its fresh, cloudy appeal. The olive oil has aromas of olive leaf, pea shoots and green tomato leaves, finished off with a pinch of black pepper. Due to its unfiltered nature, it is recommended that you use it up within a couple of months. It is available on tap at the farm’s deli and can be purchased in a refillable artisanal clear glass bottle at R150 for 500ml.

4. Bloedlemoen Christmas Gin

It is the time of year when we crave certain flavours that get us in the festive mood, and Bloedlemoen have incorporated these flavours in the best way possible – by bringing out a limited-edition small-batch Christmas gin. Bloedlemoen gin (which is the world's first blood-orange gin) is infused with a variety of spices to create an aroma of decadent Christmas cake and marzipan, and tastes of caramelised citrus, cinnamon and spice. The Bloedlemoen Christmas gin retails for R399.

5. Ovation Wine by Woolworths

A range of wines made exclusively for Woolworths, Ovation – in partnership with Diemersfontein in Wellington – is a spectacular range of wines that is perfect for the summer season, consisting of a Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot . The Sauvignon Blanc has a bouquet of tropical fruit with hints of green pepper. The Merlot offers a hint of delicious ripe red berries with undertones of spice and oak, delivering a soft finish, and the harmonious fusion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot brings forth aromas of black berries and ripe plum, followed by velvety tannins on the palate.
