Built within a refurbished triplet of Grade II-listed, cast-iron gasholder guide frames in the heart of London’s King’s Cross, Gasholders London forms part of the redevelopment of this central area of the city.

Employing her background in applied arts and architecture to the full, fashion designer Roksanda Ilinčić has lent her unique aesthetic to the development’s three-bedroom duplex penthouse to create a gloriously glamorous apartment that's packed with inspiration.

The result is an exquisite play on her signature sculptural form, textural depth and unusual colour combinations. An elegant blend of furniture, art, ceramics, books and objets, the apartment reveals Ilinčić’s passion for diverse disciplines in design and the arts from a female perspective.

5 Things We Love About This Glamorous Apartment

1. Its emphasis on women makers and creators

Ilinčić places the spotlight firmly on women makers in the interior, whether they are established, contemporary or emerging.

Murals, artworks and textiles by Paris-based artist Caroline Denervaud act as backdrops for furniture by Lina Bo Bardi and Charlotte Perriand.

Objets and ceramics include works by Australian ceramicist Alana Wilson, Berlin-based potter Christine Roland and Londoner Annette Lantsoght.

Textiles created by Kvadrat cover a Cordemeijer Cleopatra daybed in the Sun Room and colourful bespoke upholstered beds, with added texture from Lena Rewell’s merino wool blankets.

2. Its inspiring combination of vintage and contemporary design

Postmodern pieces combine beautifully with vintage Mid-Century Modern designs in the space.

A coat rack from the Netherlands, a dining table by Angelo Mangiarotti and Pierre Jeanneret chairs from the 1950s are carefully sourced finds that come as second nature to the designer.

Considered lighting appears in the form of a graphic Francois Châtain floor lamp, which contrasts with an undulating, bulbous ceramic sculpture by Eny Lee Parker and twisting ribbon lamps by Claire Norcross.

3. The no-holds-barred glamour of the apartment itself

Designed by one of the world's leading architectural practices, WilkinsonEyre, the Gasholders London penthouse unfolds over three floors, with a double-height sunken courtyard garden and feature staircase providing access to a private roof garden with views of Coal Drops Yard, London’s newest shopping and dining district in the heart of King’s Cross.

4. Ilinčić’s penchant for the area and the iconic structure in which the penthouse is situated

‘As a previous resident of Kings Cross, one of the first people to build a home here when the first regeneration took place, the Gasholders were an iconic landmark that always captured my attention and one which I found particularly beautiful,’ says Ilinčić.

‘To be able to revisit a neighbourhood that felt so familiar to me and which now hosts the institution that moulded me as a designer, Central Saint Martins, felt like an exciting opportunity. Architecture, art and design are disciplines that consistently inspire my own collections. This project has created the opportunity to expand my own ideas about creating a true reflection of my own aesthetic, beyond fashion.’

5. The special final touches that add yet more contemporary feminine appeal

Because even the scent of your home should be considered in design terms, the apartment includes handpicked scents by Lyn Harris of Perfumer H and curated literature from some of Ilinčić’s closest confidants and inspirations, including Eva Rothschild, Marina Abramovic, Alice Rawsthorn and Valeria Napoleone.

Textural bindings and covers include the work of yet more women that inspire Ilinčić’s work: Phylidia Barlow, Roni Horn, Barbara Hepworth, Anni Albers, Isa Gensken and Marlene Dumas.

And on the bedside tables, there are books by Patti Smith, Nell Dunn and Joan Didion – bedtime reading for the woman who dreams big in Ilinčić’s world.
