Block Shop Scarves

While prepping and researching for her trip to India, our senior editor came across this gem: an Indian textile company called Block Shop, founded in 2012 by American sisters Lily and Hopie Stockman. Working exclusively with a co-op of master printers in Bagru has resulted in the revival of the ancient art of block painting, a technique that has been used by artisans for over 350 years. This allowed the sisters to create a product not only rich in colour and pattern but infused with history, art and tradition. Prints are individually created by hand using vegetable, mineral and non-toxic dyes and wooden blocks. The minimalist aethestic together with the vibrant colours associated with India makes for versatile and elegant ‘wearable art’. They now ship internationally and each purchase contributes to and supports the Bagru community, as well as helping to keep alive the age-old tradition of textile-making and printing. The scarves retail for $120 (approximately R1 270). For more information or to purchase, visit *Special offer: Block Shop Textiles is offering free shipping anywhere in the world in celebration of Mother's Day. Just use the code 'MOTHERSDAY' at checkout before 11 May 2014. Text Lizette Watts
