5 Things We’re Looking Forward To At 100% Design South Africa

It’s 100% Design South Africa time, and this year's event is full of local design heroes doing all the things we love. Here's our pick of 2019's must-sees.

100% Design South Africa | House and Leisure

If there’s one event we never miss at House and Leisure it’s the annual 100% Design South Africa expo at Decorex. It’s always the best way for us to catch up on any exciting design bits we may have missed during the preceding year, and also for us to experience first-hand the brand new special commissions that 100% Design South Africa whips up so effortlessly each time.

Last year we fell in love with so much, and this year is even bigger and better. Here are a few highlights we’re looking forward to seeing and experiencing at 100% Design South Africa 2019.

5 Things We’re Looking Forward To At 100% Design South Africa 2019

1. Laduma Ngxokolo as featured designer

Even though Instagram is obsessed with his brand’s rugs and cushions, Laduma Ngxokolo of Maxhosa is still better known to the world of fashion than to furniture and homeware. But this year at 100% Design South Africa Ngxokolo is breaking out with a special line of homeware. Yes, at last, our homes will have the same quality of colour, pattern and form as our wardrobes! Expect all-new rugs, cushions and throws, as well as upholstery and wallpaper, as well as some exciting new developments you’ll have to see for yourself.

2. An all-star lineup at 100% Sleep

Joburg design stars Monique Vee, Thabisa Mjo of Mash T Design Studio and The Urbanative’s Mpho Vackier have come together to create an exploration of comfort and design at the 100% Sleep space at this year’s expo. The three of them are also creating a range in collaboration with a major local retailer, which we can’t wait to see.

3. Haldane Martin-style leisure at 100% Lounge

For over 25 years Haldane Martin has been at the forefront of locally-inspired design, and so it’s no wonder that this legend of the scene has been given his own space at this year’s star-studded event. Martin will be creating the 100% Lounge space, where ‘his understanding of how spaces function, as well as his striking furniture designs, will set the scene for a stylish leisure zone,’ the organisers say.

4. The Light Tank

If you’re looking for a bit of an escape, or just some room to recharge, then head to the Light Tank space, which sees lighting designer Nick Stickling create an installation that will take visitors on a sensory journey of light and sound. Previous versions of this feature have been really refreshing, and so we are looking forward to seeing Nick go one better with this installation in 2019.

5. Work by featured artist r1

The lines between art and design are becoming increasingly blurred, so it makes sense that for the first time 100% Design South Africa will this year include a featured artist.

And who better than the renowned street artist r1, whose work throughout Johannesburg has brought so many colourful, graphic and earth-friendly installations to the city's streets.

While r1 may be known for large-scale public interventions and street art, for the show he will ‘demonstrate the natural relationship between interiors and art and how they can inform one another for a more integrated approach to designing spaces,’ say the organisers.
