The Northern Drakensberg, dominated by the magnificent Drakensberg Amphitheatre, is home to The Cavern Resort & Spa. Set in a private mountain reserve adjacent to the Royal Natal National Park, which is part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site, the resort is less than four hours from Johannesburg and three hours from Durban.
The Cavern Resort & Spa is home to numerous Khoisan paintings, more than 200 species of birds, 150 species of trees, and wildlife, including leopard and eland. An extensive range of recreational facilities are on offer, including daily guided hikes, horse riding and trout fishing. For the more energetic, walks are organised to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre, while mountain-bike trails are available at the nearby adventure centre.
You can be as active as you wish or simply relax and enjoy a soothing massage or beauty treatment at the Forest Retreat spa, set high in the indigenous forest. When it comes to accommodation, choose between standard rooms and superior suites: the superior rooms are complete with a four-poster bed and fireplace for cooler evenings, while the superior suites are set away from the resort in tranquil gardens with views of the surrounding mountains.
Enjoy superb meals, tea on the lawns, a drink at the unique Cave Bar and linger over dinner with a bottle of wine from the cellar. Have a look at the activities tab on their website for more information on things to do in the area. Escaping to the countryside doesn’t get any better!
