Pioneering Johannesburg architecture firm Local Studio will release Hustles next week — a chronicle of the firm’s first 12 built projects, and five years of practice in the City of Gold. Co-authored by Thomas Chapman, who founded Local Studio (and is one of the 2018 House and Leisure Next Level’ers), photographer David Southwood and illustrator Michael Tymbios, it reveals the work of Local Studio in snapshots, diagrams, essays and interviews.
We will be launching ‘Hustles’, our new book on 17 August 2018. The book structures our projects according to the sub-areas in Johannesburg where they exist and to complement this we have commissioned @nicrawhani to create a short film for each of these areas. Each film is narrated by a local resident. Second is @Maboneng with @bhekidup. Swipe left for more details about the launch where we will be exhibiting the full-length films.
Speaking to House and Leisure, Thomas says he definitely has some favorites among the work the firm has done so far. ‘My favourite project to date has been the Outreach Foundation Community Centre in Hillbrow. It was my first new-build project, and even though we made a lot of rookie errors, is still the project I am most proud of.’
While Hustles looks back in time, the firm has some exciting projects coming up, he says. ‘One of the most interesting projects we are working on is a rural opthalmology centre that caters to paying and non-paying patients. The project incorporates an arts centre so that patients cured of ailments such as cataracts can experience something beautiful after not being able to see for a long time,’ Thomas says.
Local Studio has just been selected by Architectural Record magazine as one of its ‘Design Vanguards’ for 2018, joining past laureates like Jeanne Gang (2001), David Adjaye (2002) and Bjarke Ingels (2009). Their office in Brixton, Johannesburg has just been named a finalist in the Afrisam-SAIA awards for sustainable architecture and innovation, so make sure you get your hands on a copy of Hustles to fully understand what it took the firm to make it.
