Inspired by Violet George, an 89-year-old pensioner residing in Kitchener Road in Woodstock, the brains behind this venture set out to establish a clearly marked walking route in the newly revived Cape Town suburb. But there would be a special touch: the route would include specially designed resting benches along the way for the public to enjoy during their walks. The idea is to create a safer space in which people can freely move around and interact, and to include places where they can stop off, rest and savour the city views. This unique idea came from a group of friends living in and around Woodstock, who decided to make safety and the development of the area their priority. Luke Pedersen from the Cape Town design and manufacture duo, Pedersen + Lennard, together with graphic designer and illustrator Jessicah Pedersen, and art teachers Jen Pedersen, Katherine Spindler and Kirsty Rielly, took it upon themselves to implement this idea in a highly creative way. They would create a clearly marked walking route around the Fairview Avenue Park area in Woodstock, mapped out through fold-down benches made out of galvanized steel and Purple Heart wood, by Pedersen + Lennard. The benches will also have a plaque on them asking the public to ‘stand up for the senior citizens’ who may need a seat to rest on during their walk. Furthermore, there will be additional wall plaques along the route to elaborate on the purpose of the project, offer directions and incorporate a bit of a historical narrative about the area and its people – including that of the influential Violet George. So far the team have found seven residents who are willing to participate and have benches installed outside their homes. The hope is that if the venture is successful, they will be able to replicate a similar concept in other areas across South Africa. If you want to join in this worthwhile cause or find out more, join them for the launch on Saturday 17 March 2012, from 10am-midday at Fairview Park on the corner of Fairview Avenue and Victoria Road, Woodstock, Cape Town.
