The much-anticipated annual exhibition of South African collectable design is an event not to be missed. Presented by leading steel producer Arcelor Mittal SA and local contemporary design advocate, Southern Guild, the exhibition is set to showcase works at the forefront of the South African design scene. The primary event is a six-week exhibition of new works by more than a hundred of the country’s leading designers, from William Kentridge and Michael McGarry to Gregor Jenkin and Adriaan Hugo. Furthermore this year’s exhibition will hone in on South African ceramic design more so than before, with a larger presence of ceramicists. Southern Guild’s role in putting South African design on the map has been instrumental on a global scale, with exhibitions in both Miami and Dubai. Their partnership with Arcelor Mittal SA will foster the development of young local designers, further advancing the South African brand of design as a star player on the international scene. In addition to the six-week exhibition, Southern Guild will also be introducing a series of talks as well as guided gallery tours. The 2012 Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards will also be hosted at the Everard Read Gallery, aiming to bring about change in the design industry. The 2012 Southern Guild Exhibition will run from 2 August to 9 September at The Everard Read Gallery Johannesburg. For more information visit southernguild.co.za or call 044-877-0719.
