If you’d like a touch of Africa in your home but don’t want to go with the traditional, run-of-the-mill curios, the Cape Town-based decor outlet Klooftique has an alternative that will suit most tastes. The ‘My Animal Friends’ range forms part of their latest releases, and features a rabbit, rhinoceros, elephant and giraffe carefully constructed from wire. But they aren’t your regular locally made wire items – each one has been made using several layers of wire, with every strand carefully manipulated to mimic the contours of the animals’ natural shape and form. The result is impressively lifelike and almost gives you an artist’s impression of the real thing. Think complex scribbles translated onto wire. This medium also makes the animals light and contemporary, and therefore suitable for both travellers and local buyers. Created by Marianna Furman and George Magaso, the animals have already become a talking point in the store. About their unique approach Marianna says, ‘We enjoy supporting local craftsmen as we pride ourselves on being a local manufacturer of fine furniture, from sofas and chairs to dining tables’. Marianna and George have also worked on several other exciting projects together, including a range of fruit bowls, another recent release. Their works are typical of Klooftique’s often playful style and their distinct take on Euro-African decor pieces. Wherever possible, they also strive to use sustainable materials in their products, so you’ll know you’re going easy on the environment too. ‘My Animal Friends’ retail at R250 each.
