These bright, fun Minkster USB storage devices were designed by Capetonian Alex Seaton and are manufactured in China. Alex exhibited her creations at last year’s Design Indaba Expo and they have since grown into a brand of their own. They have been developed with kids in mind – the six quirky characters in the Meitropolis Series are named Dizi, Lex, Nik, Poppy, Pums and Rics – but they’re just as suitable for adults. The devices are made of durable silicone that’s scratch resistant and can be cleaned easily with a damp cloth. The character head separates from the body and acts as the cap on the USB connector to keep dust at bay when it’s not in use and the characters are so well designed and of such high quality that they would look stunning on a shelf with a collection of vinyl toys. The Minksters are suitable for Macs and Windows PCs and have a storage capacity of 4 GB and excellent read/write speeds when you’re transferring data. Each unit includes some free stuff for kids, such as a 1024×768 wallpaper graphic, info on the character, and a virtual slider puzzle game. Alex recently also released a range of companion stationery and homeware for those that can’t get enough of their favourite character: 30x30cm cuddle cushions made of polycotton and synthetic stuffing (R229), button badges (R9 each), greeting cards (R29 each), gift tags (R9 each) and sticker sheets (R29). Minkster Meitropolis Series designer USB Flashdrives sell for R299. The entire range of USB devices and companion products can be bought online at the Minky store (shipping charges will apply).
