For the last three years, Southern Guild has been providing a platform for local designers and artists to create collectable, limited edition pieces. The initiative has seen about 50 diverse designers invited to produce new work every year, and the stunning collection that has been built up includes works from the most prominent figures in South African art, craft, jewellery and architecture. Now, Southern Guild is putting the best of the last three years together, in what promises to be a breathtaking show in Cape Town. Work from 62 local designers and artists will be displayed, bringing the finest collectable design to Cape Town for the first time, at the launch of the Woodstock Foundry, a new development in the Woodstock Design District. Contributors include Gregor Jenkin, Haldane Martin, Dylan Lewis, Heath Nash, John Vogel, Bronze Age, Conrad Botes, Brett Murray, James Mudge, Lyall Sprong Porky Heffer, Ceramic Matters, Nic Bladen, Pedersen and Lennard, Angus Taylor, Guy DuToit, Wayne Barker, Life, Ronel Jordaan, Koop, Dahla Hume, House on Fire, Dokter and Misses, Laduma Ngxokolo and many others. Co-curator Trevyn McGowan believes it is an important next step to be showing the collection in Cape Town. ‘I am really looking forward to seeing a Cape Town audience’s response to this curated collection of products. For the last three years we have only shown in Johannesburg and USA and we feel it is a celebration bringing the best of South African Design to the Woodstock Design District.’ She adds that in addition to the highlights from the last three years, they also have two ‘incredibly exciting over-scaled pieces from Astrid Dahl and Michael Methven which are surprise launches at the opening’. Southern Guild is curated and directed by Trevyn and Julian McGowan of Source. The ReCollect show will be on at the Woodstock Foundry from 1-11 March 2012.
