A year after moving down to the Cape, Elgin-based couple Gideon and Era-Marie Schoonraad, have launched a beautiful range of local ceramics, under the brand Era Design. The range is 100 per cent local, in both its inspiration and its conception. ‘I find my inspiration in the beauty of our serene environment, nestled between the Groenland and Hottentots-Holland mountain ranges,’ says Era-Marie, who created the designs of the ceramics. Gideon, who is responsible for the graphics, says that, ‘the Eucalyptus trees were inspired by the imagery of Era’s family farm in the Overberg region.’ Era explains that the manufacturing process is a collaborative effort of locally sourced artisans, which aims to enhance the sustainability of the regional economy and industry. ‘We started off by using existing ceramic moulds which were available in the marketplace. The limitations that this presented forced us into creating our own unique range of designs, which we are currently expanding on. The designs with the diagonal lines forms part of our new range. We have also created a print range for use in cushions and lampshades, which will be released soon.’ Era Design ceramics are currently stocked at Gabrielskloof Wine Cellar’s Deli, located in the Botriver valley and will shortly be available online.
