With a deep-rooted interest in crafts and a number of successful projects under his belt, Cape-Town based designer Michael Chandler is always working on something new and intriguing. Many of his latest pieces are for the kitchen, including this ceramic colander bowl which is ideal for serving winter pastas. Michael explained the thought process behind this unique creation: ‘The ceramic colander is a playful twist on an overlooked, everyday kitchen item. By remaking a traditional colander in fine porcelain with painted holes, its function as a draining bowl is transformed into a functional and fun decorative piece for the kitchen and dinner table. It makes a perfect garden salad or spaghetti bowl. The tripod base is a little nod to traditional potjie pots and prevents the bowl from rocking.’ We love the painted dots on the inside and outside that cleverly reference the original porous product. Its finished off with a handy pair of C-shaped handles for easy use. You can find this quirky kitchen collectible for R650 at Michael’s recently launched beautiful website, chandlerhouse.co.za, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or by visiting Ebony in Franschhoek.
