This month, Stephan Welz & Co’s Johannesburg Auction will feature a selection of Works on Paper by local and international artists. The artworks on offer are beautiful, intriguing and varied and range from drawings and paintings to limited edition prints. Walter Battiss, Peter Clarke, William Kentridge, John Muafangejo, Fred Page, Irma Stern and Diane Victor are just some of the South African artists included. P.E Central N.E (image 2), a Fred Page gouache on paper, is a characteristically stark painting that weaves social commentary, humour and fantasy. Page is widely celebrated and regarded as one of South Africa’s most important and undervalued surrealist painters. From an edition of only 10, William Kentridge’s Landscape (image 2) demonstrates his mastery of etching techniques. Where the copper plate has been directly engraved before inking, a slightly ragged line remains. Intimate in scale, the velvety rendering is loose, honest and confident. With estimates from R2 000, the April Auction promises opportunity for new collectors and enthusiasts to step into an investor’s market.
