If you’re longing for a taste of life as a celebrity, punk princess/fashion designer Betsey Johnson has just the thing. Her ultimate holiday home, the Betseyvilla in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, is now listed on Airbnb for R8 043 per night. Not bad, considering Gwyneth Paltrow’s own Mexican home goes for around R105 000 per night.
Described on Airbnb as ‘a fusion of old and new, a tribute to the life of Betsey Johnson and all of her favourite things’, the boutique villa is all about ‘lounging, laughter and love’. The host invites you to imagine ‘sipping champagne in the sun in a fabulous pool overlooking the richness of small rural Mexico’ – yes, please!
Three years ago, the home was renovated by Mexico City-based architect Andrés Benítez to replicate an Italian villa. After Johnson redid it, it took on much more of a Mexican aesthetic, however there’s still a distinct Italian feel in the floor-to-ceiling windows, marble floors and arched doorways.
Clearly Johnson’s design talents don’t stop at fashion, and the villa is rich with her signature goth-glam aesthetic. Picture bold colours, vibrant patterns, luxurious finishes, some of Johnson’s own original artworks and, of course, multiple portraits of the designer herself. All decked up in eccentric decor, the villa features a large infinity pool, exercise room, exterior kitchen, a private beach and two beach huts, as well as a multitude of ‘toys’ including a Jeep Commander.
If you’re looking for a truly VIP experience, a concierge is available throughout the trip and can organise ‘onsite meal preparation, coordination of visiting chefs from around the world for private dinner parties, in-house yoga instruction, spa treatments, snorkelling trips, yacht charters’… the list goes on.
The pad takes up to eight guests, so why not plan a weekend away in Mexico with friends, and split the bill for a boutique-hotel experience worthy of a celebrity?
